Accessibility

Statecraft builds for public agencies, and public services have to work for everyone. This page explains how this website is built for accessibility, where it still falls short, and how to reach us if something gets in your way.
Our standard
We design and build this website to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at Level AA. That target covers the WCAG 2.0 Level AA criteria that the Revised Section 508 Standards apply to federal websites, and the WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria in the ADA Title II rule for state and local government.
What that means on this site
Every page works with a keyboard alone. The item in focus always shows a visible outline, a “Skip to content” link comes first on every page, and focus moves to the new content when you change pages.
Text and controls meet Level AA contrast, including the text set over the animated illustrations at every point of their animation. Pages reflow down to a 320-pixel-wide screen and at 400% zoom without side-scrolling, every piece of text can be enlarged to at least twice its size with browser zoom, and pages stay readable with larger text spacing.
A “Pause animations” control stops the film, the animated illustrations and every other moving part of the site. It is the second stop when you press Tab on any page, it is at the foot of every page, and it is in the command menu. Everything also stays still if your device is set to reduce motion. Nothing on the site flashes more than three times a second.
Pages use headings, landmarks, lists and labels so screen readers can find their way around. The film at the top of the home page and each illustration has a text description. The contact form labels every field and explains errors in words, next to the field they belong to.
The site follows your system’s settings for more contrast and for forced colors (Windows High Contrast): text, controls, the logo and the pictures stay visible on light and dark themes.
How we test
Each page is checked before every release with four automated test engines (axe-core, IBM Equal Access, HTML_CodeSniffer with its WCAG 2 AA and Section 508 rule sets, and Lighthouse) at desktop and mobile sizes, along with scripted checks of keyboard use, focus visibility, contrast over moving images, zoom, text spacing and target size, and a review in forced-colors mode. Automated tools find only part of what can go wrong: this website has not yet been tested with screen-reader users or had an independent third-party audit. We will update this statement when it has.
Known limitations
The animated illustrations on the home page are drawings. Each one has a text description, and everything it shows is also written out beside it, but a screen reader cannot explore the drawing piece by piece.
The film at the top of the home page is silent, so it has no captions. It is described in a sentence for screen readers; it has no audio description.
Links to job listings and to our social media profiles lead to other websites, whose accessibility we do not control.
This statement covers this website only. For questions about the accessibility of Statecraft products, use the address below.
